Inside Companjon - Aoife Maher

As part of our new blog series, we're sitting down with some star employees, who share all things on what it's like to work at Companjon, what's happening behind the scenes and honest experiences. This week we spoke with our Senior HR Recruiter, Aoife Maher.

Hi Aoife, could you tell us what excited you about joining Companjon?

I was offered a position to work for a multinational firm the same day I was offered to work for Companjon. There were things that resonated with me about Companjon. From my first interview with HR, I soon realized that I would have the opportunity to be free, develop processes from scratch, implement them and bring something meaningful to this young company. Also having direct exposure to the CEO and Executive Members was another selling point for me. In a large firm, it can be quite hard to make change and sometimes even be heard. Joining this company was a decision I am glad I made, and I haven’t looked back since.

Is working here different to what you expected?

Yes. I never had startup experience, so it was all new for me. From the beginning I was given the opportunity to present my ideas and strategic vision to help build the HR department. I got to roll up my sleeves and get creative. When you are given freedom, you are not afraid to make mistakes and even though this is a startup venture, there is a lot of structure here. The strength of the Executive Team also exceeded my expectations – not only are they industry experts who have led credible companies, but they are also powerful leaders who you can learn so much from. To sum up, Companjon is better than what I expected.

Tell us a bit a bit your role as a HR Recruiter

Every day is different. I am responsible for the entire recruitment lifecycle, from candidate screening, to interviewing to assisting the HR manager with onboarding and training and working alongside our Chief HR officer and Marketing team on employer branding. I also hire the best and brightest candidates who can play an integral role in building the company up for success and for this, I look beyond just a CV and skills, I explore personality, attitude, mindset, culture fit and assess the value a candidate can bring to Companjon.

Apart from screening thousands of applications, what else are you working on right now?

Right now, I am actively headhunting talent for new and upcoming roles we have. I am also working on an exciting initiative with top universities across Europe, Ireland, and the US to bring our first ever graduate program in 2022.

What is your favorite thing about working at Companjon?

It is hard to pick one, but the key things would be, having the opportunity to grow, express ideas and be challenged. The people I work with are super supportive, friendly, and ambitious, it really feels like a family! Everyone is willing to try new things. For example, I suggested the Hell and Back challenge as a team building exercise and almost everyone has signed up for it, ready for the challenge ahead.

How would you describe Companjon’s culture?

We embrace the motto ‘go where no one has gone before’ and embed this into our culture. We are a team of visionary and ambitious individuals, encouraged to take risks and maximize our potential. There is a welcoming and encouraging culture here, I feel that I can always ask questions and get support if needed.

If you could switch job roles with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

It would be with one of our Solution Managers. It looks fun to build products and solutions from scratch. As a Solution Manager, you can get creative and change the perception of how people view and experience insurance – it looks exciting. Also, being able to work closely with our business partners to develop innovative solutions and enhance their own business and customers’ experience.

Any final thoughts for our readers?

As the famous quote goes, “there is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” For me, Companjon was a risk worth taking. This experience has thought me a lot and I look forward to growing the Companjon family!
